OUGD402 - Final Crit for Partner's Typeface

A group of us had to present and recieve feedback on the typeface that we created for our partner. I was very happy with how my typeface finished as I had a lot of reasoning behind the type for why it represented my partner. My partner also gave positive feedback and said that she was happy with it, and with why I chose the design decisions that I did.
The rest of the group also gave positive feedback, and said that it was quite friendly to represent her personality. They also said I could experiment making sentences with it as it is a body text, rather than a display text to see how that worked.
We had to create a name tag to give to our partner, and this was mine:

I decided to make it green and black, because when I was asking her questions for the project, she said that these were her favourite colours. I decided to write 'my name is charlie' so that I could see how it worked as a sentence, rather than just more than one word.

We now have to identify a range of examples of Graphic Design which fit under these headings.

Design Context

This is the page layout for Hunt Studio's portfolio, and I chose it because I really like the monochrome scheme, as it works well with the range of tones that are in the images. The images are also very clear, and hovering over them tells you exactly what they are.

This is a logo and app for a social networking site, which allows you to communicate to others instantly. I chose it because it is another example of where design is used: on smartphones. The type used for the logo is supposed to reflect friendliness as the font is rounded, and the overlapping represents how everyone is connected.

This is design for an upmarket gossip magazine, and I really like the layout of the page, where the title and image is seperated, unlike most magazines which incorporate the two together.

Face is a branding agency, and this notebook is part of their stationary range. I liked the simplicity and bluntness of it.

This is part of a collection of flyers promotion electronic music at a club in Juarez. I really liked the individuality of each flyer, and I really like the smoke design within the vinyl shape on this one.

This is a handcrafted limited edition linoprinted t shirt by Neuramy, and I picked it because I love handproduced design, and in particular linoprinting. It also shows yet another medium where Graphic Design can be applied.
I love this beautiful letterpressed business card, advertising for space on a farm for weddings, retreats etc. I think the colour scheme works really well, as this shade of red is associated with farms, tractors barn  roofs etc.

These menus were also a booklet, and were
presented at a charity event. I chose it because
the type, page layout and overall look of the
book is stunning. I chose it for design context because I haven't seen a menu like this before. If you click on the link there are more pictures of the inside.

The illustrations on this website are amazing, I chose this particular one because I love the mixture of gradient, shape and colour. I think it would make a great print for a cafe or home.
This is a really interesting project, where designers create a luggage label for the 92 places which are mentioned in the song 'I've Been Everywhere'. There are some amazing designs, and this is one of them.

Scale

This is a restaurant in Mexico, and I picked it as it shows design can be projected anywhere, even in an interior to portray a message and feel. I think this is a really sophisticated branding project.
I chose this because it is such a small scale, but it is really effective. I would like to make one of these at some point.
This is a luggage label, designed as part of a project where designers create one for the 92 countries mentioned in the song 'I've Been Everywhere'. I love how it portrays Waterville to be a bright and sunny place, the illustration is really cute.
I really like the simplicity of this, and I chose it because the design is on the soap. Most soaps have the logo or a pattern printed on them, and I like how it makes each bar a bit more interesting.
I love these trim packages for a clothing range. Rather than a plain tag, they really have character and a good design and texture to them.

This is a packaging label for a liquor, and I chose it because I really like the typography that is used.
This is a handproduced keyboard made from one piece of maple wood. I chose it because  it is yet another piece of design is used on another material which I think is really creative.
I love the letterpress illustrations on this coaster, it makes it really special. I just think it is a lovely piece of design.
I chose this because I really like wall vinyl decor and think it is an easy but effective way to jazz up interiors. I really like the type used on this one.

This is creative advertising for Plant For The Planet,
and implies the effects that C02 emissions have on the environment. I chose this because it is something very intricate to fit on something so small and delicate.

Tone of Voice

The 'cool' is ambiguous and could mean either cool as in temperate, popular or to chill out. As it is in green it helps convey the chilled out feel, and all of this makes the tone of voice quite laidback.
Theurel & Thomas are a patisserie based in Mexico, that sell macaroons. There branding is very sophisticated and elegant, reflecting on the macaroons. By having white as the main colour, the bright macaroons stand out, highlighting them.
These are a healthy microwave food company, based in El Montero. They wanted to change people's opinion on fast food, and did this through their identity. The packaging is incredibly simple and clean, which suggests the food is as well. By having good design, it encourages people to buy it because they will think the food is of good quality as well.
This is branding for kitchenware, and the design is based on the products capacity, and different sizes, so it is colour coded. This, and the rounded type gives a practical, clean, approachable feel to the product.
I really like this packaging for juice, because the rhyming of 'Juicy Lucy's', the colour scheme and pastoral images provide positive emotions.

This is a children's book which raises money for the charity MUM'S. The illustrations were designed by Favre, and the bold colours mixed with the matter paper stock create a warm, inviting feel.
These business cards are for a jewellery firm which have signature rose clasps. The hand painted roses reflect that, and because of the style I think they convey an upmarket, sophisticated range which targets an older audience.

I chose this type because I think it is very playful. The A shows a very cheerful, goofy dog, and the curly L suggests a carefree attitude.

This packaging for Ted' Sweet Treats is quite girly because of the feminine, warm colours used. I think it sets the tone for what the fragrance's will smell like. The type used for 'Ted's Sweet Treats' is script, and conveys a girly, luxurious tone.
Lita is a programme where people can learn Spanish by going abroad. This is one of the posters from the branding, and the pastoral image portrays an idyllic environment to go and learn in. The thin stroked, spacious type suggests a friendly, relaxed approach.

Message/Ideas

The concept behind this is you can donate different amounts of money to feed an amount of people. It shows you each option you can donate, and your stats, in a very stylish app.

I think this logo is really clever because it has an 'E' for East on the right hand side which is the same as a compass, and as it is for a music school, it has a cockerel which are known for making noise in the morning.
Save Michigan
This print is used to persuade people to buy local foods in Michigan rather than buy imported food. This is so that farmers and bakers etc can stay in business.

The Happy Film
This was a film about happiness, and how to achieve it through things such as meditation and cognitive therapy. Sagmeister and Walsh created the films titles for it which are very creative and interesting. Worth a watch.

Museum Sonderjylland
The identity for a group of danish museums merged into one of modern art is very original. The message behind the type is that the slanted and straight lines represents change and shift in the history of art.

Rio 2016
This is the logo for the 2016 Rio olympics, and the concept behind it is very inspirational. The shape is part of the landscape in Rio, and the yellow represnts the sun, blue the water and easygoing lifestyle, and the green represents hope and the forests. They embrace all faiths and religions, therefore the shapes are united as people.

Riffle
The branding for this fish restaurant is very appetising. There are lots of illustrations of fish to reflect the cuisine and the fact the philosophy is that the menu is built around sustainable.

Function

This could be used as a poster in a classroom or office to help students and workers remember these shortcut keys. The illustration replaces the function of the shortcut effectively.
Magazines are used to inform people of things that they are interested in. I chose this particular one because I really like the unique layout.
This is advertising a barbers shop, and tells the audience its opening times, where it is and what it does. I really like the clean, monochrome design.
This advertises and promotes an event at a shopping centre, and it is effective because it is based around Christmas, and the theme of the poster depicts that well. It also has all the information that is needed clearly.
I really like this infographic style packaging for suncare, and it informs the audience of what the product is.
This print is a comical way of suggesting designers are perfectionist's at type and layout, by creating something which is very unproportioned.
I chose this because I love the colour and layout of this website. Its function is to inform and promote the company, which I think is done well as the type is clear and stands out from the image.
I think this website is very easy to understand and read. It is informing and promoting women's fashion, and it is a aeshetically pleasing to go through. I think the type and white colour scheme reflects a sophisticated and cool feel.

 Wedding Invitation
This papercut wedding invitation informs guests of an event to attend.

 Garage Sale
This collection of posters are to advertise a garage sale, using only Cooper Black. The designer has altered some of the letters to have elements of used items in them, which reflects the garage sale.

OUGD402 - Feedback

This post is for my blog group to comment on and give me feedback on these five questions:

Is my blog up to date?
Is everything explained clearly?
Is everything referenced to?
Is it easy to navigate?
Are images relevant?

OUGD402 - Feedback

In our blog group we had to discuss what we want feedback in everything we have done so far and how we would give feedback, and came up with a list:

Quality of Work
- Show a range of examples
- What design decisions made
- Understanding design principles

Blog
- Up to date
- Quality of text and image
- Quality of written element
- Tagging
- Organisation

Amount of Work
- Enough development
- Enough research

Communication
- Blogs
- Work
- Feedback
- Verbal

Time Management
- Blog
- Project management

Contextual Writing
- Can show through blog

Assessment
- Are we passing the criteria

We then discussed as a class what every group had, and included them into our own points. The next task was to create 10 questions out of the points we had that we felt were most important.

Am I up to date?
Is everything explained?
Is everything tagged appropriately?
Are all the requirements met?
Is work relevant?
Is everything referenced to?
Is it easy to navigate?
Is each post in the right blog?
Are images relevant and of a good quality?
Does it communicate progress as a designer?

Now individually we have to pick the five questions we want to know the feedback for the most, and write them in a seperate on here so that the rest of the people in my blog group can comment on my posts and give me constructive criticism.

0UGD403 Alphabet Soup - Typeface Group Crit

We had a group crit with Amber, Simon and some peers and presented our ideas to each other. We then got feedback from the group, and here are three constructive criticisms I had to think about:

1. Experiment with different paper stocks. As I am creating a typewriter font this could enhance the texture of the type, and make it more realistic if I try drawing on different materials.

2. Damaged Text. Amber suggested making the text slightly uneven, at different angles subtly or parts of the text missing to create a more distinct typewriter effect.

3. Scale. When designing the font, it needs to be able to work at different scales because the final font will be produced on A1 tracing paper. This means the thickness of the stroke might have to be altered if it has previously been produced smaller, which mine has.

OUGD403 Alphabet Soup: Visual Thinking

Final Pieces

These are my final pieces for the Alphabet Soup: Visual Thinking task. The rest of my development and research for the project can also be found on here. The word I had to make the letterforms represent was Dissect.

Evaluation

How I Approcahed It
I approached the project by taking the term Dissect literally. I looked at the definition which said to cut things up and study them internally, or to examine closely. My aim was then to find as many different ways as possible to portray dissect, as I didn't want to have two of the same style.
How I Worked
I started off by drawing lots of sketches in a notebook, so that I could visualise what they could look like, and I could change my ideas easily. I alway find working from pen and paper helps before I go to screen, as I then scanned the sketches into Illustrator. Once there, I created more accurate mock ups on Illustrator which were all to the right scale. Then I printed them off, traced them using tracing paper, and drew them onto card. I usually work like this because I like to make sure that my designs are in proportion and are definite.
What Worked?
You can easily tell what each letterform is, as I didn't want to alienate them too much. Even the 'S' which is mixed up, and the 'B' which is four different typefaces still clearly represent their letterform. I stuck to the criteria which was to work with black and white, keep them handdrawn, and present them on a 10x10cm format. I also tried different mediums such as watercolur, papercut and different types of pen. I am happy with the majority of them, especially given the timeframe as I found the word quite hard to work with.
What Didn't Work?
I would have liked to spend more time on the finish of them, to make them a higher quality standard, but given the timeframe I think I did the best that I could. There are a couple of letters such as the B and the H that I am not happy with, and I dont think they are a reflection of the type of work I usually produce.
What Would I Do Differently Next Time?
Next time I would try and manage my time better and come up with all the ideas as soon as I could so I could allow myself more time towards the end to produce better quality prints. I think I would also try and work quicker as I tended to get distracted easily by eating, cooking or socialising.
