 Module Title
DESIGN SKILLS

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME
Danielle Harrison

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I have learnt so many skills throughout this project which are fundamental to my practice, especially when using grids and page layout. I think this is really important because layout is a huge part of design and within my work as I am interested in editorial and packaging. I have definitely applied this to the 10 things booklet, the InDesign brief, the Speaking From Experience brief and the A Brief History Of… brief, as I am doing booklets for all of these. I think I have applied the skills effectively as I am making much more considered design decisions and really thinking about what works best for example when using gutters and margins.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
I have learnt how to work systematically as I used this method when drawing grids out and thinking of all the possibilities I could use for my 10 things booklet.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I have realised that I really enjoy doing layout and editorial design, even though I didn’t think I would have been that interested in it before learning about grids and layout. I think it could be a strong part of my work if I keep practicing with grids and layout, as I really like doing it and I think the 10 things booklet that I’ve made is good and I wouldn’t have usually done something like that before this module. I think I have learnt more about printing in this module with formula colour printing and four process printing which is useful as well.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
I don’t think I use colour that well so far, but mainly because I use a limited colour palette usually so I haven’t really experimented with using lots of colour in my work, and that is something I could try out in another module. I also need to make sure that I go over terminology as I forget what some words mean like synecdoche and different parts of type anatomy.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
Learn more about InDesign before I go to print, as when I had to print my 10 things booklet it was a bit of hassle because I had fold out pages, so had to print two separate documents. Although I have learnt more about printing in InDesign now, which will help me next time.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
