OUGD402 What Is Graphic Design? Pt 1

In a group, bought 10 images that represented what we like about the creative field, and we then discussed what part of Graphic Design interests or inspires us. We wrote down everybody's inspirations and then compared them to the rest of the class what were the most common points.

As a class we collectively came up with 13 of the most shared points, which were:

With this we have to select 5 of the points and find some visual examples of each one.



Creative Use Of Type

Building A Green Economy 
I have always liked this mixed media cover of the New York Times Magazine because although the type is very simple and clean, the illustration is a collage that represents the type. Michael Freimuth designed it.









Follow Dreams Not Orders
Ben Johnston uses lasercutting to engrave type onto wooden barrel lids, which is a technique I really want to use as I like rustic and wooden designs. I think it would make an interesting wall hanging.





GuimarĂ£es Jazz Poster
I really like this advertisement for a Jazz festival because the type forms the instrument in a carefree way which sets the tone of the event. I just think the type is cleverly used as the layout makes you want to read it, and the main information is bigger than the rest. It isn't boring to read like a lot of posters.















San Miguel
I love the bright colours and summery feel this type has, to encourage people to drink the beer in Summer. I really like hand drawn type so this is definitely my style.


















Bon Bon
This is just an example of hand drawn type that I really like, and I particularly like the B.












Jazz Festival
This is another poster for a jazz festival, and I like how the J is turned into a musical instrument as it interwines with the event.

















The Coffee Facts
I love how typography is the main point of interest in inforgraphics because it is used in such a visual way to put across facts in a less tedious way than an article or book. Using different sizes and colours of type together really helps highlight the important parts, and I think they are very helpful.














 
Whisky Art Print
I have always liked this print because it looks hand produced, and I like to create this kind of effect using lino printing. I love all the different types of handdrawn type here.

















Typography Sketchbook
This is some handdrawn type by Sophie Henson, and I really like sketchbooks and doodling type which is why I've chosen this.
















Letterpress Wedding Invitation
I think wedding invitations which use letterpress are so effective and have a very special feel to them. I would love to design wedding invites and use a variety of print methods.








Method Of Production

Papercutting by Julene Harrison
I love papercutting and I think it is a great way of designing things. I really like using this method of production as it is very hard, but very rewarding at the end.

















Wooden Run Type
This was designed as part of a Nike installation by I Love Dust, and I just really like the wood effect and think it is a different way of producing things. I really like the 3D effect as well.

















Snapple Packaging
I love packaging and think it is such an essential part of production, because every product needs it. It has so much scope, and it has so much potential for different messages to be put across.





Catch Me If You Can
This is such a captivating title sequence by Saul Bass, I love watching it. Title sequences are such a vital part of film to give the audience an insight to the plot and cast.






Wood and Acrylic Brooches
Malika Favre is a french illustrator and she collaborated with Elisa Gilbert to design these cute brooches. I think they are lovely, and it just yet another way design can be incorporated into so many different methods of production.












The Food Doctor
This is another example of packaging, and I love the simple illustration on it as it clearly informs the potential customer what it is. It was designed by design agency Falcon, and it is a wholesome soya and corn crisp range.



Halibut
This is branding for a fishmonger, designed by Skane Davis. I love how the identity is very contemporary and easy to understand across the whole range, and represents the product clearly. With branding, there are lots of things to consider in the method of production such as websites, packaging, advertisements, business cards etc.







Sabeena Karnik
I think using MTP (materials, techniques and processes) is a lot of fun and it can be used in commerical work, as Sabeena Karnik has designed many things like this 2012 for companies such as Orange.









Aesthetic Quality

Naomi Shiek
This wedding invitation is beautiful, and I think the papercut flowers add to how special the occasion is.


















Coffee Packaging
I love packaging and coffee, and thought that this was a lovely example of the two combined. I really like the illustration and colours that are used here.









Vogue Australia
This is Lana Del Rey on the October 2012 edition of Vogue Australia, and I think it is really classy. All the colours used and the narrow depth of field, and of course Lana add to a really aeshetically pleasing magazine cover. I'd like to collaborate with a photographer one day to create something like this.













Mountains
I think this is a really pretty geometric illustration, and I just love the shapes and textures that are used. I really like this style.

















Terrabyte
I think the textures and colours on this print are beautiful and I love this sort of style to be put up as a wallhanging. I like the simplicity and the nature of the print.



















Meaning and Message


 Dot by Jing Zhang
This is part of a collaborative project between 100 designers. Each designer was given a template of a dot and had to come up with a design that represented themselves, and have a connection with another dot. On the DixonBaxi website it says 'Join the Dots is a celebration of the spirit of collaboration', as their approach to design has always been through collaborating, and all the designs will be featured in a book.
 Ritzling Champagne
There was a lot of thought that went into the packaging and branding of this product and the case study says the packaging was 'Designed to capture the sense of celebration owned by champagne and bubbles', by using optimistic, delicate illustrations. 
Perfume Packaging
I love why the designer chose to use illustrations of the anatomy on these perfume 'vials': "Each go the illustrations on the back of the label relates to the aromatherapy of the scent. The jasmine + sandalwood fragrance is to increase romance. The bottle features an anatomical heart illustration. The rosemary + bergamot fragrance is blended to improve metal clarity. The bottle features a brain illustration. The eucalyptus + lemon fragrance is blended to improve respiratory health. The bottle features an illustration of a pair of lungs. " It's so clever as it clearly shows you which bottle is for what, and the detailed illustration suggests it is a health product rather than a cosmetic product, which suits the intention of the perfume.

City Of Melbourne
The rebranding of the City of Melbourne is a really dynamic and fitting representative of the city, and across the whole campaign, the identity flows very well. Everything the branding is used on conveys an up to date, sophisticated vision of Melbourne.
Yoobi Branding
This is branding for Yoobi - a temaki bar in London. The shape of the logo represents the shape of the food which is clever as you have an idea of what product is. I think that the branding conveys a very clean, contemporary and sophisticated design which reflects on the food, branding and restaurant. The link to this has a lot more images that show off the complete branding which I think is very successful. 




Simplicity

Beat Rice
I really like the simple type design of this packaging, as it gives it a rustic, simple feel. I think because of the material it is printed on, it doesn't appear too simple, and it still has a lovely appearance.
IBM
I think this is a very clever logo as it visually shows 'IBM' in an illustrative form that is incredily simple to understand, but very clever in how it has been approached. This has always stood out to me.
 Tim Dobbins logo
I just think that this is a very nice use of type, using a simple idea and turning it into an eye catching piece of branding.
 James Joyce
I've chosen this film poster because it is incredibly simple as it only uses 2D shapes, which are easily achieved either by hand or software, but it also depicts the title very well. As it is 'Rear Window' it shows a view of buildings within a square, and blinds to represent that. I think it has been done very well.
Going West Sailboat Print
This is a screenprint of a seascape, and although it is simple, I just think it is a great piece of illustration.
